Returning after over a quarter of a century, noise rockers The Jesus Lizard sound reborn on the toothsome 'Rack'.
This was unexpected. Although David Yow, David Wm. Sims, Duane Denison and Mac McNeilly have played a few reunion shows since they first splintered in 1999 shortly after releasing their last album 'Blue', they'd never intended to record a new full-length. 'Rack' was announced only this summer, and according to Sims was only put together "because we thought it would be fun to make the record." That's as good a reason as any, and The Jesus Lizard pulse with energy on these new recordings - Yow's voice is as elastic as ever as he wails and gargles over his bandmate's raw, distorted hardcore variations. But it's not a throwback album by any means, only one of the tracks ('Lady Godiva') was written in the band's initial period, with the rest being penned and dubbed over the last five years. And the band have an appropriate home on Mike Patten's Ipecac imprint - we can't think of a better place for their growling, irreverent brand of rawk.
