Quadric Surfaces
Jamal Moss adds a new string to his bow with a first suite of music for moving image, compiling his soundtracks for the abstract, analog animations of Gabriela González Rondon - RIYL Ursula K Le Guin, Sun Ra, Denis Wise
Taking license (not that he needs it) to pursue a music away from immediate dancefloor needs, ‘Quadric Surfaces’ stands up amongst classic Moss sides such as ‘The Language of Strings’ and ‘Imaginary Landscapes’ as a sterling example of his sound’s mutability and visionary prowess. Unanchored from regular kick drums, all Jamal’s key ideas on cosmic be-bop, rhythmic cubism and synth expressionism frolic with a fresh purpose in his attempts to match Gonzales’ imagery, said to share a spiritual space with sci-fi writer Ursula K Le Guin or filmmaker John Whitney.
The tracks relate to a pair of films ‘Parallel Spheres’ and ‘Figures in Mynd’, premiered in October 2023 during Videodroom / Film Festival Ghent. They contains some of his freakiest works in recent memory - and that’s saying something when it comes to Moss’s sprawling catalogue. ‘Quadric Surfaces’ pitches rumbling low end and coiled metallic tones like a cyberpunk Heinrich Mueller work, and he lays out some of his craftiest slow/fast syncopations in like a Cuban Kraftwerk in ‘OGEE’, before exploring weightless physics in the wondrous ‘Ceilies’, and recalls drummer Christos Chondropoulos’ uchronic modal machine folk in ‘Brachistochrone’. His heightened rhythmic perception is devilishly strong on the zinging rhythmelody of ‘Conchospiral’, and ‘Diacaustic’ locates his unique harmonic suss blushing in the most curious juxtapositions.
