A sought-after scuzzy racket from The Chills’ Peter Gutteridge and ‘80s Dunedin, NZ’s legendary Flying Nun scene surfaces like a missing link between Syd Barrett and Suicide. Fiends for sputtering drum machines, psych guitars, and snarled vocals will be in their element
First ever vinyl issue of Kiwi legend and core Flying Nun Peter Gutteridge's amazing, one and only solo album, originally released in 1989 on tape via Bruce Russell's Xpressway. I'll be honest; what I know about New Zealand's end-of-the-earth rock scene I could write on the back of a rizla packet, but this, like most other Dead C and related goodness we've encountered makes us feel guilty that we haven't explored the scene much further.
Aside from his actions in The Clean, The Great Unwashed, and The Chills among others, Peter's only solo record, 'Pure' showcases a stripped-down, rudimentary sound brimming with character that ticks all our lo-fi boxes, from the twitching, basic drum machine patterns to his love of soured, fugly distortion and discord to his canny hooks and possessed-sounding vocals, covering loads of ground from off-key adjuncts to The Durutti Column to pulsing, Suicide-like moto-rokkers and chirpy machine instrumentals. Highly recommended!
