Boomkat Product Review:
In case you hadn’t noticed I’m a bit of a rocker at heart, and more than a sucker for a good old fashioned balls-out rock record, so this one, coming at me towards the end of a long day is a much needed hit of pure rock energy. Pterodactyl are a Brooklyn-based band and use their well honed rock skillz wisely to create some kind of hybrid of stoner rock, math rock and post-punk. Well sort of, I can’t explain it really, they’re kind of like a less rounded and less content Deerhunter, with angular jaunts and shouty bits in equal measure and a technical skill no doubt learned from listening to way to many Don Cab records. The songs might not be the most memorable in rock history but when you’ve got an album this energetic it hardly matters – the sun’s shining and all I want to do is turn this up loud and mosh my little stripy socks off (they’re nice, you should see ‘em). Also being called Pterodactyl is a good move, that flying dino-bird was always a favourite of mine, and gives the band a kind of rock credibility which harks back to the golden age of big hair and BC Rich guitars. Rock out baby, and don’t forget to bring your hot friend.
