Pruillip
Belgium’s Pruillip livicate the undead sound of sludge metal with a strong nod to Earth’s blueprints on their debut with Cortizona, the label behind aces by Ann Eysermans, Gen P-O w/ H30, Frederic Croene
Initially brought together for a show hosted by Dennis Tyfus at De Nor, Antwerp, in 2021, Louis Evrand & Annelies Van Dinter’s Pruillip now pour out their first recordings with a self-titled ode to the classic amp worship and molten traction of sludge metal - the early ‘90s subgenre forged by Earth and pursued by likes of The Melvins, Thrones, Sunn 0))), and Om over the years.
While defined by monstrous, detuned and slowed down guitar riffs and crashing drums, the sound of sludge metal can be taken as a no-person’s-land ripe for incursion. That’s where we find Pruillip’s maiden venture, where Annelise’s sylvan vox and purposeful percussion distinguish the sound from its original forms with a more trip hop appeal akin to Tricky, whilst Evrand’s claw-fisted riffs properly anchor it in the mutant genre. Their eight debut songs mark up among the most potent we’ve heard in this paradigm for donkey’s years, dragging your stoned cadaver from the bowel-quake subharmonics of the ‘Introduction’ to new strain of the sound elevated by Annalise’s gloomy vox and synth tingle on ‘Place Your Cards’, yoking back their anguish into the anticipatory might of ‘Distracted Enthusiasm’ and something like a swaggering PJ Harvey in ‘Mirrors’, before toasting your cones with the charred amp hymnal ‘Offload’, and shoring up in the stygian procession ‘Ataraxia’.
