Boomkat Product Review:
Tony Buck, drummer of Australian improvisers The Necks goes solo on this release, turning his hand to spiky, energetic post-rock, dabbling with hardcore, and even Bob Dylan as he goes. After the angular 'What You Want' - an opener that recalls Slint or Shellac - comes a fairly radical reinterpretation of Dylan's 'Masters Of War', probably sounding more like Fugazi than the man himself. By 'Transducer' the combination of thorny guitars and artfully abrupt rhythmic changes really hits its stride, mellowing slightly for 'Kayla' and especially 'Follow You', which might qualify as a math-rock powerballad masquerading as a Yo La Tengo song. It's a highlight, however you want to describe it, representing an oasis of sentiment amongst the far more brutal writing of 'What I Mean' et al.
