Boomkat Product Review:
Superior Viaduct initiate their very promising W.25TH label “for inventive sounds from current artists” with this oneiric session by Laraaji & Sun Araw with Alex Gray (D/P/I) recorded in Switzerland and Germany.
It’s a big heavy YES for the vibes in Professional Sunflow; each player drawing the best out of his foils in a triadic delta of Africanized rhythms, lustrous psychedelia and expressive glossolalia that actually sounds like the work of many more than just three people.
Pre-written passages meld with in-the-moment improvisation in a beautiful flux, using the mutant variable of Gray’s synthesis to gel and moire the air between Laraaji’s golden soulful croon and shimmering zither, and Stallones’ shifty patina of free-floating keyboard and guitars.
The Leipzig recording is a real gem, springing a life-affirming flow of celestial jazz and new age psych gestures helmed in tribal rhythm, whereas the Lausanne show documents a more meter-less, drifting sequence of strokes, radiant chimes and vibrant harmonics for the first part, before switching left into a loping sort of skronky kosmiche blues jam for the 2nd.
It’s a real head-full, deserved to be heard in beautiful places with good people.
