Boomkat Product Review:
Trevor Jackson relinquishes three more aces from up his Playgroup sleeve on the 5th of 9 x 12”s in the Previously Unreleased series.
Back at the turn of the millennium, Jackson’s Playgroup project arguably laid the groundwork for stacks of today’s disco-looping editors, paralleling the actions of Chicago, NYC, Detroit operators such as Theo Parrish or UK heroes such as DJ Harvey by swerving house currents in favour of something rawer, soulful, and most importantly, disco-ready.
This plate helps build the bigger picture of Playgroup’s place in the disco/edit lineage, gathering momentum between the stripped down, rudely distorted bounce of Get Down on the front, and over into mutant, minimal house trips with the hazy shimmy of Strange Days and the reinforced boogie soul bump of Like This.
