Former CCO fixtures Cyne return for 2008 and beyond with a new album for Hometapes outta Portland, Oregon. 'Pretty Dark Things' is very welcome set of Cyne's happily skewed hiphop sound, with a focus on live sounding productions with a summery Afro-beat slant mixed with their slight indie melodic sensibilities. Check 'Calor' for beaming afro-percussive timbres mixed with raw 808 snares and conscious rhymes from MCs Cise Star and Akin. Never settling for one set rhythm style, snapping slow-fast Miami styles appear on 'Money parade' and sink to slow burnt midnight jazz ambience on the brilliant 'The Dance'. 'Opera' is another highlight, bearing a darkly ominous Mellotron line and brushed jazz/hiphop drums to create a blue ambient mood, a vibe which reappears throughout the album and appealing to a far wider range of heads than your usual hiphop crew, which is exactly what Cyne have always stood for. Very good indeed.
