Boomkat Product Review:
Exploring the space between African rhythm and German electronic minimalism, Mapstation’s first album for a decade catches Düsseldorf lynchpin Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot) really getting closer to his personal ideal of rhythm and sound
While Mapstation has been on hiatus since 2009, Schneider has been keenly busy with his ace label TAL, as well as various action with Harmonia’s Roedelius and Moebius, and art/research trips to Africa. In ‘Present Unmetrics’ he effortlessly combines these contrasting poles of sound and styles in a mix of sloshing rhythmic polymetrics and physically modelled synthesis, resulting 10 pieces that move and evolve with an engaging curiosity for cyborganic and subtly forward strains of electronic music that more closely resembles the fractal not fractional sprawl of nature and human movement, both muscular and emotional, to land a sound somewhere between his former Kreidler bandmate Detflef Weinrich and Rashad Becker.
