Boomkat Product Review:
Ho Tep, the harder-to-define offspring of Eglo Records, introduces a new artist by the name of Dirk Gerner with his debut, the 'Preface EP'. Styles are more soulful, jazzy, for this one, following the boogie-riddled dancefloor output of Letherette, Mau'lin and Throwing Snow. Floating Points' vocalist of choice, Fatima, lends a sophisticated vocal to the burnished downbeats of opener 'Rubies & Diamonds', while Olmino imbues the spacious rhythms and neon synth squirts of 'Attempting Cry' with a crooning Brazilian quality ripe for the Gilles Peterson types, while setting 'Loose Lights' with a classy Bossa vibe. On remix duties, fLako gives 'Rubies & Diamonds' a more insistent and uptempo electronic charge akin to the likes of Dorian Concept, Flying Lotus or DVA's Soule:Power.
