Boomkat Product Review:
Candidate for one of 2016’s most unexpected, incisive pop albums comes from The Range, whose previous, mostly instrumental hip hop records for Donky Pitch hinted at a compositional nous which is in full bloom here.
The title Potential refers to the concept behind the record: turning vocal performances, sourced exclusively from unsigned artists on youtube, into fully fledged and unique productions; uncovering their potential in a way that strongly side-eyes Simon Bowell’s X-Factor pebbles.
Sounding something like Clams Casino, and voiced by artists from a range of R&B, UK grime, hip hop and African traditions, the result is an emotive and richly layered suite mixing innovation, insight and passion to achieve something that clearly transcends the sum of its parts.
