In the slipstream of his FFWD dub-tech IDM album for Peak Oil, Russia’s Hoavi smudges his palette and your temples to QTT’s anxiety-easing ambient agenda
Although traces of his previous, rhythm-driven projects remain in the ether on ‘Posle Vsego Posle Vsego’, Hoavi wholly alters his style to more anaesthetic needs with 11 tracks that edge closer to the weathered textural ambience of QTT alum Huerco S aka Pendant or Ulla than his fevered club stuff. That said, there’s is still a rhythmic intricacy and movement to his arrangements of lathered chords and glistening pads, it’s just mostly empty of percussion, and even when the drums are more pronounced, they’re ephemeral and elusive.
The album is faithfully sequenced for bath times and down times, convecting a breezy elemental spirit from the distant chamber-like vapours of the title track to the delicious, Bellows-like ferric wow and flutter of ‘Winds’ at its close. We can hear hints of Huerco S.’ nervous lushness in ‘Ne Opomnitsja’, and an urge toward more heartbroken emotions in the grand but coruscating strings of ‘Marshcat’, with the tangled pulses of ‘Mercenary’ rinsing the palate so that the suds of ‘Metro | Mysli’ settle even lighter on the ear’s tongue, and the brooding, silty light/dark flux of ‘Perfect Darkness’ are best absorbed.
