Tom Boogizm comes thru with a killer slab - his debut album, pre-dating those mighty shotta-shots, Rat Heart, etc.
'Posh People Make Me Ill' firmly established Tom Boogizm as one of Manchester’s most articulate artists; combining a wealth of dusty-fingered digging knowledge with modest bedroom studio set-up to alchemise and animate a sound quite honestly all of his own. We can easily draw parallels between PPMMI and everything from the ghostly post-punk pop swoon of Vazz to the frayed crack of early DJ Shadow, and the Afro-Latin romance of Detroit techno. Yet, there’s a crucial, loping diction and teasingly playful character to his minimal but lush creations that arguably could’t have come from anyone else.
As a DJ - in clubs from Manchester to South Africa, and on radio for NTS MCR - he draws for myriad sounds reflecting a classic sonic wanderlust that’s deeply indigenous to this region, and is equally adept at keeping a ‘floor on their toes with curveball swerve as he is at seducing stoners into red-eyed reveries. That rooted knowledge is key to the charm of these productions, glyding from a sorta lo-fi take on early Æ with Answer The Ask, to take in slompy jazz breaks with Numb To It, and a gob-smacking, delicate-but-rude ECM flip, thru to strung-out blues dedicated to Sebokeng in South Africa, or zombie-stagger bassbin business in the Jon K-christened Punishing. And still, our favourites are saved ’til last with the air-stepping echo and delay of Platt Bridge Hit Squad and the pure melter, Cod A God, deeply redolent of some Relics Interval or long-lost AI gem.
Totally timeless and sequenced for optimal play-it-again-and-again factor - the kind of record that could come out at almost any point in the last 20 years and you’d be hard pushed to pin down where and when. Classic?
