Pop Ambient 2024
Kompakt's latest Pop Ambient volume features glossy, beatless gear from T. Raumschmiere, Mikkel Metal, Yui Onodera, Blank Gloss, Sono Kollektiv and others.
We're not sure how many Pop Ambient releases there've been so far, but it's been interesting to watch ambient music morph and evolve while Kompakt has stayed rooted in relatively the same zone. If you've enjoyed any of the previous anthologies, 'Pop Ambient 2024' won't surprise you, but it'll likely appeal. What it lacks in shock, it makes up for in warmth, and tracks like Thore Pfeiffer and Niko Tzoukmanis' moving 'Kontur' and Segenklang's gaseous 'Bergfrieden' are a reminder of simpler times.
Like the previous volumes, it's ambient music that has its roots in '90s back rooms and after-hours parties, the mushiest Eno compositions and Wolfgang Voigt's own Gas project. So Blank Gloss's 'Weedless Hook' sounds like the sun coming up after a heavy festival jaunt, with Daniel Lanois-esque guitars and celestial pads, and Max Würder's 'Fathom' can't help but remind us of The Orb's peak era, complete with the all-important nod to Steve Reich.
