Boomkat Product Review:
The German soul vocalist returns to the Musik Aus Strom fold after collaborating with ex-Funkstorung man Michael Fakesch with this hard-hitting 4-tracker. Clearly influenced by his work with Fakesch there is a stuttering glitched-out swing to the tracks here, but with clear nods to the West Coast Fly-Lo/Brainfeeder scene. Sweezee’s vocals effortlessly hold the tracks together, and while the tracks occasionally threaten to overwhelm with their almost ADD quality they’re just pulled back in time not to cause confusion. The highlight here for me is the most minimal jam – ‘Eating at the void’ takes a simple, lo-fi drum machine and lets Sweezee’s vocals syrup-coat proceedings without interruption. I’m almost reminded of the neo-soul of Spacek or Amp Fiddler, but make no mistake the production here is future facing stuff. Recommended.
