Boomkat Product Review:
UK techno disruptor Metrist metes out a 3rd EP of itchy, offbeat club music for Batu’s label
Hitting the mark somewhere between the corkscrewing rhythms of his label boss and the misshapen structures of Blawan, or Happa’s unpredictable arrangements, Metrist trades in deep fried freakiness on all six cuts of ‘Pollen, Pt. III’.
Vocals are a crucial ingredient here, found most rudely on the squashed slug of ‘Bullet Time’ stalked by Older Brother, and more obliquely in the strobing, cut-up phonemes that perfuse the brittle 2-step of ‘Leven Lever Liver Love’, blooming into distressed chorales and midi-eval soft synths. The voices feel more like two Shell’s mutant hyper-pop vocaloids chattering in ‘Higher Higher Dawn’, and then riddled into roughshod, singeli-esque briskness, offset with curdled choral motifs in ‘Y Y Y My’, and attacking like one of Vladislav Delay’s Dancefloor Classics in ‘Ark Specific’.
