Boomkat Product Review:
Rednose Distrikt is the pairing of Steven De Peven and the very excellent Aardvarck, and while their sound no doubt has and will be destined for Giles Peterson's record box, the production here is so dusty and broken it makes up for any stylistic shortcomings. Material ranges from the Herbert meets Amp Fiddler skewed funk of "Maaitiemaii" to the Dabrye style low-end instrumentalism of "Wop" and all points in between - making for a varied and at all times soulful listen. "Don't Break" is a particular highlight - all interwoven string samples and spacious layering tempered by a wobbly bassline and Aardvarck's dusty breaks - brilliantly evocative stuff. The album is 21 tracks long and with most of them keeping to the 3 or 4 minute mark it never loses focus or your attention, with the guiding factor throughout being a late night jazzy soulfulness that's kept from coming over too "mature" by Aardvarck's mighty hand. Brilliant stuff and a hugely enjoyable listen - well worth checking out if you're a follower of Herbert, Moodymann or the excellent Delsin label.
