‘Plays’ clutches all five 7”s of Ekkehard Ehlers’ cut-up experiments with records by John Cassavetes, Robert Johnson, Albert Ayler, Hubert Fichte, and Cornelius Cardew. Originally collected as a CD and now making a maiden LP showcase, the suite is exemplary of a probing attitude and freedom that came with the whole “laptop music” movement and glitch tekkerz of the late ‘90s into early ‘00s, when artists ranging from SND to V/Vm, Fennesz and Stephan Mathieu were combing electronic and acoustic musics into finely granulised new stands that reflected the times’ transition into the digital era.
Frankfurt sound artist Ekkehard Ehlers’ was key to the moment, locating a suspenseful beauty in his paradigm on this series of works which have long been hailed classics of the form, variously distilling the complexities of Cornelius Cardew to a gauzy bliss, simmering Albert Aylers’ fire music to crackling embers and sparks, or flipping Robert Johnson’s delta blues beyond anything that could have been imagined back at the start of the century.
