Pitch, Paper & Foil
Christopher Bissonnette's achingly fragile 4th solo album for Kranky serves to highlight a growing familiarity and adeptness with his unruly modular set-up.
As with his previous album, 'Essays in Idleness', his new effort was also constructed from a range of synthesis and compositional techniques. But here he does so with a more subtle approach in an attempt to reveal his synth's more delicate, quivering timbers and tones, whilst also revealing its inherent infidelities and artifacts as a by-product of the process.
The final result is a poignant sequence of modular studies quietly blossoming gorgeous, intricate, crystalline structures clearly exhibiting a firmer sense of restraint in their concise composition and filigree timbre than we've previously heard in Bissonnette's work.
Its music for close, intent listening, best consumed under cover of darkness or half-light for the most-rewarding results.
