Boomkat Product Review:
Carrying the subtitle 'Samples From The Helsinki Underground 1981-1987', this compilation could hardly bill itself in a more intriguing fashion. Sure enough, the bedroom dub beatboxing of Swissair's 'Baggage Claim' ushers in a collection of Euro DIY detritus. Following on from this introductory drum machine experiment comes the lo-fi noise outbreak '9-Volt' by Musiikkivyory. Presumably the likes of Pan Sonic would have had links to this scene, you can imagine their output inhabiting the same musical universe as with something like '9 Volt', or for that matter Ferric Johnsson's squealing feedback piece 'Punainen Koodi'. Elsewhere, more organic elements crop up: the homespun psych of Mietoherne' 'Kitarakotelo' and Mika Taanila & H.S. Tuominen's lengthy guitar dissection 'Five Easy Pieces For Do-A-Loop'. This compilation is by no means an especially easy going release, but it does draw your attention to the comings and goings of a music scene that otherwise would be largely unrepresented in the wider world, buried under the sands - or perhaps more appropriately, snows - of time.
