Boomkat Product Review:
Saxy beast, Mats Gustafsson touches places lesser felt at the behest of X-Ray Tapes with a truly beguiling slab of bittersweet drones coaxed from the Dubreq Pianomate - a strange creation from the manufacturers of the Stylophone, designed to turn your upright joanna into a giant Stylophone!
The premise was simple; X-Ray Tapes asked Gustafsson to create a recording using an instrument that he’d never used before. He reached for a Pianomate and the results are totally captivating; yielding two side-long tracts of warm, keening, warbling pitch clusters of an ilk that are difficult to recreate on his preferred instrument, the saxophone.
The tone has a sort of eerie but lovely theremin-like quality, redolent of some lysergic moment from an early Disney soundtrack locked in and expanded until we almost see its complex filaments glowing and overlapping each other.
Safe to say we’ve never seen or heard anything quite like it before.
