Philophobia (Deluxe Version)
*Now reissued and extended with Peel Session recordings and a T In The Park live set from 1998* Opening with a typically confrontational lyric (one which is probably best left unprinted here), Moffat launches into 'Packs Of Three', the first of many drawling, rather grim short-story style vignettes that make up Arab Strap's excellent second album, 1998's Philophobia. This music still has an immense power, and while much of it lies in Moffat's often unpleasant, always insightful lyrics, the skeletal simplicity of the band's particular brand of post-rock remains deeply effective all these years on, with the likes of 'Here We Go' and 'Soaps' still shining brightly.
