Boomkat Product Review:
Wonderfully transportive modular synth experiments from the north German duo of Ulf Schütte (Alien Radio) and Niklas Dommaschk. As Phantom Horse they contribute to a searching, syncretic tradition of rhythmelodic exploration stretching from Moondog and the '60s New York school of linear minimalism thru the whole Cluster/Harmonia axis and the way Byrne, Eno and Hassell appropriated African rhythms. Maintaining hypnotic, systolic drum machine pulse and patiently layering melodies into lathered polyrhythmic structures, the formula is straightforward yet allows for richly expressive gestures from the duo, resulting nine tracks ranging from cute, spiralling vignettes to longer, unravelling jaunts which rarely challenge our attention span, and in fact could happily play out twice as long. Imagine if Astral Social Club and Peaking Lights went on a retreat to the Bavarian alps and made music together, and it might sound like this… Top notch music from Dekorder.
