Peru Boom! Bass, Bleeps and Bumps from Peru's Electronic Underground
Tiger's Milk Records and Strut perfectly plug a gap in our collective knowledge with this unparalleled set of bass-heavy bleeps and bumps from modern day Peru.
Focussed on a handful of like-minded artists from the capital city, Lima - Dengue Dengue, Tribilin Sound, Deltatron, Animal Chuki and Chakruna a.o. - it rotates 16 fresh and unique productions fusing traditional, native cumbia grooves with new sounds and structures adopted from dubstep, techno and electronica. Whilst their sound bears up to obvious comparisons with everything from the Cómeme sound to the shared, latinate traits of Elysia Crampton or Arca, or Lisbon's Príncipe crew, the results are strikingly original and infectious in their mix of styles.
Some, such as Deltatron favour hyper-lucid rave colours and dynamics - best in the spiralling 'Ego Trip' - whilst others like Tribilin Sound effectively do a wicked sort of moody beatdown, as with the lip-bitingly tight blend of techno-crisp drums and woozy dub chords in 'El Carmen', where others such as Piraña Sound System coin a sort of mescal-infused psychedelic delicacy with the spellbinding eeriness of 'Naranja Limones', and Elegante y Imperial mix up vocoders with weird distorted vocals and stardust keys as you've never heard it (well OK maybe Uwe Schmidt beat them to this one).
We could safely say that it's one of the most charming collections of new music dance music we've heard in 2015, at least, so all respect due to DJ Chakruna for the cherry-picked track-list and our induction to Lima's amorphous, tropical sound. Highly recommended!
