Boomkat Product Review:
The hugely influential Galaxie 500 at long last release their collected Peel Sessions, and in so doing just about fill in all the remaining gaps in their discography. The tracks captured on this release were recorded between 1989 and 1990, and unbelievably are only made available for the first time (in an official capacity at least) by this release. In amongst the band's own material you'll find a wealth of covers, starting with Joy Division's 'Submission', which in this incarnation sounds like a good humoured breeze, although it still rocks pretty hard. Also making an appearance are fine renditions of Young Marble Giants' 'Final Day', Jonathan Richman's 'Don't Let Your Youth Go To Waste' and an excellent version of 'Moonshot', originally by Buffy St. Marie. The covers serve as an interesting addition to the Galaxie 500 repertoire, but as you'd expect, it's their own songs, like 'Blue Thunder' and 'Flowers' that really standout here. Awesome.
