Pattern Language
Curated by Pattern Studio collaborator Traianos Pakioufakis, "Pattern Language" is a set of unreleased music that's intended to soundtrack a special Musical Chair. Features contributions from Jonnine, Lawrence English, Chris Abrahams, Lisa Lerkenfeldt and others.
As part of 2022's Melbourne Design Week, Pattern Studio's Lily Goodwin and Josh Cain were invited to take part in the annual Chairity event. For charity, designers were asked to rethink a specific chair, and the resulting pieces would be auctioned; this year, the studio created a Musical Chair that allows wireless musical playback using two Bang & Olufsen bluetooth speakers. "Pattern Language" is the accompanying album, and features seven previously unreleased works put together exclusively for the exhibition.
The set begins with an eerie, short saxophone improvisation from Shoeb Ahmad, before drifting into 'Notebook of Interiors', a near-sacred meditation from Lisa Lerkenfeldt. Chris Abrahams' lengthy solo piano piece 'Speculative' comes next, before Lawrence English's gusty 'Uncomplicated Grief'. Our pick of the bunch is Jonnine's 'Raindrops', a skeletal composition assembled from glockenspiel and melodica sounds, but Kane Ikin's cinematic 'New Forms' is almost as impressive.
