Boomkat Product Review:
Grizzly Bear's Christopher Bear and Daniel Rossen smudge a drawn-out, folky fingerprint on their emotional treatment for Celine Song's acclaimed 'Past Lives'.
One of last year's most celebrated films, 'Past Lives' is a subtle, Linklater-esque romantic drama that examines the relationship of two South Korean friends whose lives diverge as they grow up and become embroiled in other partnerships. Bear and Rossen interpret these themes lightly, without much melodrama; their themes, played on piano, guitar and strings, are smartly balanced with quirky studio techniques (echoing spring reverb, subtle synth) to prevent it from sinking into overfamiliarity. And although its impact outside of the film's compelling narrative is deadened slightly, it should appeal to anyone who's been missing Grizzly Bear and needs their fix.
