Boomkat Product Review:
Passages is a stop-gap package of rare and out-of-print vinyl-only tracks, remastered in order to keep fans going until Maserati's new album drops next year. The music here is culled from their split LP with Zombi as well as their remix LP. The four originals in the first half present a band that's somewhere between the kind avant-garde instrumental rock Battles are famed for and more groove-based, DFA style material. 'No More Sages' and 'Monoliths' straddle this line particularly effectively, giving the post-rock crowd something to dance to. The album's second half is dominated by remixes (including contributions from Tim Goldsworthy and !!!'s Justin Van Der Volgen), all of which manage to sound relatively in-keeping with the tone of the source material. Zombi's Steve Moore' provides an overhaul of 'Monoliths', and it's probably the best of the bunch; the remix replaces the looping guitar patterns and kraut-disco drums with arping synths, electronic bleeps and even a bit of sampled string orchestration. The end result emulates the kind of kosmische perfection achieved by Cluster in their prime, which can only be a good idea.
