Boomkat Product Review:
Something a little different for the Spectrum Spools label, ‘Parthenon’ is the debut from PLVS VLTRA, the pseudonym of veteran musician Toko Yasuda, who’s probably best known for her work as part of Blonde Redhead. Yep that Blonde Redhead, and ‘Parthenon’ is, for all accounts and purposes, a pop record. Of course it’s not your regular kind of pop, but pop it is – there are vocals, choruses, melodies and it’s likely to get stuck in your head. ‘Parthenon’ is mercilessly put through the smoothie maker though; sounds are eroded, jacked up and chopped to bits resulting in a sing-song album of crispy neon memories and plastic synthesizer blips. It’s a little like watching a twenty-odd part anime series in thirty-five minutes, and that’s probably why it fits into the Spectrum Spools catalogue so well. There’s a fitting lack of regard for taste and decency and love for all things culturally 1992 that makes it an almost obvious choice. Well worth a closer look.
