Boomkat Product Review:
Fol Chen is a project led by Samuel Bing, guitarist in Liars, a band whose members seem to be devoting their time to extra-curricular activities left right and centre. Only last week, Pat Noecker cropped up on the excellent These Are Powers album, All Absurd Future, but while that album reveled in disjointed NYC indietronics, this album is generally a little less earnest in its execution, arriving at Of Montreal-style electro-pop jaunts like 'No Wedding Cake' and the splatterfunk brass uproar of 'WInter, That's All'. Fol Chen's sound might tend towards erraticism but whatever tangent they head off in - even on the queasily morose bell-tolling of 'Please, John, You're Killing Me' - the writing never goes over the top and production is a finely crafted balance between gaudy electronics and sensitively wrought instrumentation.
