Boomkat Product Review:
From the fecund Brussels undergrowth that produced Oï les Ox; Roxane Métayer yields her slow burning, hallucinogenic drone-folk storytelling style to Primordial Void after a debut with Morc earlier this year
‘Paroles Cavernicoles’ (or literally ‘Cave Lyrics’) explores a space between wizened folk and avant garde experimentation, unfurling creaking strings and cracked windowpane woodwind around her choral vocal harmonies in two durational segments that lure us deep into her world. The first part’s ’Troglophonie’ opens the account with sepulchral plainchant that echoes, to our ears, aspects of both Teresa Winter and Laura Cannell, especially as searching strings unfold and merge with woodwind, feeling out the space with icy fingers and by flickering candlelight to discover a whole cave system of reverb and echo populated by medieval folk spirits. ‘Grottes Gracilles’ follows to seemingly settle in one cavernous space where she enacts ritualistic sonics, layering sibilant whispers and plucked strangs, then floating on almost Raga-esque drones, before picking out iridescent, spectralist tones, only for her vocals to return in an enchanted way surely resonating the enigma of Oï les Ox’s remarkable debut with The Death of Rave.
