Boomkat Product Review:
Last seen on the Under The Spire imprint, Ollie Thurley's Ithaca Trio project teams up with the prolific Rutger Zuydervelt for a new split release. Thursley's up first with four pieces that take in elements of crackly, fizzing microsound and sprawling avant-jazz mutations, hitting particular high points with the soft, bowed landscapes of 'Archaeologists And Double Bass' and the hacked-up free-improv of 'Architecture And Quantum Physics', which features artfully disassembled percussion and tortured sax lines. Machinefabriek offers two longer form drone-driven pieces, exhibiting a certain amount of symmetry with their seven-minute-plus durations and studious tone. This might actually be some of the most mature and experimental work in Zuydervelt's sprawling discography: 'The Desolate Delay' cycles through thrumming overtones and a subtle, hissing room noise, while 'The Harmed Harp' is similarly uncompromising, drawing out ringing metallic sustains and up-close, beautifully recorded percussive details. Impressive stuff from both contributors.
