Boomkat Product Review:
Kent quintet Codes In The Clouds delivered something of a post-rock opus with their Paper Canyon album of last year, and now the band present this fine remix LP as an appendix, featuring such artists as Machinefabriek, Library Tapes, Nils Frahm, Rival Consoles and Worriedaboutsatan. The set gets underway with an opening cut that isn't strictly a remix at all. Instead, it's a reworking of epic album track 'Don't Go Awash In This Digital Landscape' featuring Paul Mullen of The Automatic, bringing vocals to the already immense original. Although there's a healthy supply of big name artists involved in Paper Canyon Recycled, the project began as an open call to fans and fellow artists to submit their own remixes. After sifting through over a hundred entries the band arrived at a pretty solid set - even helping to build relationships between the band and other artists that stretch well beyond the scope of this project: Iambic's remix of 'Distant Street Lights' impressed so much that it scored him the production gig on the band's next album. In other highlights, Tom Hodge draws out all the neo-classical beauty from 'We Anchor In Hope' while Rutger Zuydervelt expands the usually far more abstract Machinefabriek universe to incorporate some lulling drum routines and gently drifting humming tones. Erased Tapes labelmate Nils Frahm is given the last word, augmenting 'The Distance Between Us' with some typically well poised piano melodies and flecks of fizzing ambience. Great stuff all round.
