Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper
Panda Bear meets The Grim Reaper in a magical 5th solo album outside of his Animal Collective duties.
Crafted in conjunction with psychedelic supremo Pete Kember (Spacemen 3 etc), it professes a mixture of loping drums influenced by the '90s hip hop of ATCQ and Pete Rock, coupled with a colourful instrumental/hardware palette of synths, guitars and vocals, rather than the sampling methods employed in his seminal, signature side, 'Person Pitch' (2007). The songs are patently written by Panda Bear - the lilting melodies and stacked, almost religiose harmonies are as delightful as ever - but the sound design is genuinely remarkable, thanksno doubt at least in part to Kember's invaluable input and knack for transposing the sound in Lennox's head into the swirling, intersecting layers of 'Come To Your Senses' or 'Acid Wash', for example.
While previous single tracks, 'Mr Noah', and 'Boys Latin' gave a fine taste of what to expect, the rest of the album really is even better, from the dancefloor-destined lushness of 'Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker' to the sweeping celestial keys and synth gremlins of 'Lonely Wanderer' and its adjoined come-down, 'Príncipe Real', or the pulsating kosmiche pop of 'Selfish Gene'.
