Boomkat Product Review:
Animal Collective hard on the pop money with their 10th studio album, Painting With, which was partly recorded in the same Hollywood studio as The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and features guest contributions by John Cale and Colin Stetson.
Still giddily optimistic and wigged at every angle, they’ve actually tightened up a lot of their sound here, swerving any “drawn-out musical passages” and use of reverb to achieve a direct - rather than distant - and concise pop sound packed with instrumental and electronic quirks. Seriously, not a split second is left wanting for colour or detail.
There’s heavy but deft use of modular synths throughout the record, charged with a battery of unique percussive sounds gleaned from the library of Hollywood studio drummer Emil Richards, and also an array of foley objets used in the Planet of the Apes and Poltergeist.
They themselves describe it as “our Ramones record” and that’s clear as day to hear, especially in the pulsating momentum and chanting harmonies of Natural Selection or Summing The Wretch whereas the likes of Hocus Pocus undoubtedly conjure comparison with The Beach Boys going Silver Apples of the Moon, and Vertical matches their UK counterpart, Bullion, for levels of squeezy psych-pop soul and funk.
