Boomkat Product Review:
Out Of The Past was recorded well over a decade ago, and finds a much-deserved belated release, some four years after Derek Bailey's passing. Here, the legendary improv guitarist is joined by noted drummer Steve Noble for what has to stand as one of Bailey's most visceral and sonically confrontational recordings. The guitar comes coated in a thick veil of distortion, meaning that the ordinarily very complex and detailed playing style we associate with the old master is obscured or exaggerated, particularly during 'The Long Wait' and 'Break Away'. On the album's more sedated moments we get to hear Noble's sensitive drumming work mirroring the more percussive aspects of Bailey's playing style, and it's here that some of the duo's finest moments can be found, as on the incredibly restrained 'Out Of Sight' and '7 Shades'. Having said that, there's no denying the power of fuzzed-out noise-fest 'TIme Regained', particularly given the seniority of Bailey at the time. Recommended.
