Boomkat Product Review:
Having made two sets of recordings as a trio, Bo Weavil improv group Decoy combined forces with jazz legend Joe McPhee. Decoy already features the incendiary organist Alexander Hawkins, drummer Steve Noble and double-bassist John Edwards, but McPhee certainly adds an extra dimension to this already very potent three-headed unit. The sax legend is given free rein across the extended experimental landscape of 'Opening Night' (a forty minute set), while 'Breakout' documents a more concerted blast of energy and experimentation from all performers. Shifting into more playful, lyrical mode, a final eight-minute recording of 'Dancing On The Wolf Road' finds these stellar performers letting their hair down a little and finding an easier-going groove to occupy.
