Synf boffin Dave Burraston aka NYZ furnishes Superpang with an hour of glacial microtonal drone fizz finesse
Making his first mark of the year after a prolific 2020, in which he issued the cuboid rave tackle of ‘Old Trx [87-9]’ for The Death of Rave among many others for Important, Fory Evil Fruit, The Wormhole etc; NYZ’s ‘OSC2’ plays fathoms deep into his explorations of meditative drone with an unbroken tract of silty, gradated shifts that properly absorb heads in their spongiform texture. Of course, it’s not really one that you dip into, requiring committed time and space for optimal reception.
Recorded using GFORCE impOSCar2 - a software emulation of a classic ‘80s synth used by Ultravox and Orbital - on 4th August 2021 at Noyzelab in Cootamundra, NSW, Australia, the piece follows in a vein of NYZ’s meditative aids with a concentrated focus on chakra-aligning stasis. Seriously, very little happens, but what does occur draws us well inside its granular movement and gradually dissolves temporal perceptions. We can only imagine it will have a strong appeal to followers of meditation techniques, and should no doubt be checked by anyone who’s found themselves drifting higher plains via the music of Eleh or Phill Niblock. Maybe don’t play it while driving or trying to focus on other things, though.
