Orpheus' Pipes (Object-Oriented Studies)
Noisy and lush, processed, free abstractions of Highland bagpipes and their french Occitan cousin, the cabrette from a wayward drummer/producer last spotted on killer gqom/hard drum mutations with Citizen Boy, 3Phaz and Ehua
One of few (the only?) artists whose work has spanned roiling krautrock for NNF to deadly gqom in the past decade, Forrester keeps everyone guessing with ‘Orpheus' Pipes (Object-Oriented Studies)’; a study on sampled/resynthesized bagpipes that prizes their capacity for producing strange timbres and jogging nostalgia. The project is Forerster’s attempt to reconnect with dual roots split between his english father and Aveyron-hailing side of the family, forming a sort of “anthropological reverie” from rough hewn and flipped samples of 78rpm recordings.
In that sampledelic sense his approach and aesthetic echoes work by Stephan Mathieu and The Caretaker, but certainly errs to the coarsest results of their recordings, with aspects also slightly echoing the intent of Christos Chondropoulos’ Athenian Primitive or Debit’s ‘The Long Count’, but, like we say, at times much rougher around the edges, although with more blissed sensations found on ‘Section’ and swept into lushly inclement regressions on ‘Cleft’ and really pushing out into atavistic mountaintop expressionism on ‘Orpheus’ Pipes Continuum’.
