Boomkat Product Review:
Ha! Nix Noltes? Sounds like that craggy-faced actor guy. In fact, this Icelandic band are a group comprising between 9 and 12 members (depending upon who's available at the time presumably), all united under the banner of Bulgarian folk music. It'd probably be fair to describe the band's sound as somewhere between the Eastern European stylings of Beirut and Mùm's clattery post rock (indeed, this probably has something to do with the fact that the band is partially constituted from members of Mùm). While Zach Condon weaves the conventions of Balkan folk into a more widely appealing pop song format, Nix Noltes are more concerned with traditionalism, fashioning lively instrumentals that sound a bit like the soundtrack to a wedding dance in an Emir Kusturica film, as these things always do (and we always point out). Recommended.
