Boomkat Product Review:
Released via Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde label, the latest EP-length offering from Justin Broadrick's Jesu project finds the ex-Godflesh man forming a trio with Dave Cochrane and Phil Petrocelli, taking on a far more organic live feel compared to the sort of electronically-ordered doom-pop you'll find in the earlier Jesu output. 'Losing Streak' channels detuned metal guitars and shapes them into a sludgy, yet almost emo-tinted pop song. Would it be unbelievably out of order to casually drop the word Fightstar into this review? Very possibly, but it's done now and there's no going back. The title track is similarly anthemic with its lumbering, brontosaurus take on shoegaze, while 'Deflated' and 'Morning Light' offer less direct, yet still eminently worthwhile variations on the theme - the EP seeming to slow down to a sublime stoner chug the longer it continues.
