Mexico City's Paurro follows last year's slippery 'Galavision' with a dancefloor-poised set of dedications to female warriors and forgotten women, using brittle Afro-Latin rhythms alongside lithe breakbeat, techno and house vamps.
'Onna-Bugeisha' emerged from Paurro's interest in forgotten women, when she considered Mexico's alarming rate of femicide. Drawn to Japan's pre-modern female samurai, whose legacy was almost entirely erased from history for, Paurro takes a different musical routre from her last EP, opening with chirping crickets and complex hand drum rhythms, before 'Jingū Kogo / Emperatriz Jingū' slides into slippery speed garage.
'Ninja' juxtaposes rickety organic pads with xenharmonic synth stabs and bass clonks before it transforms into a breakbeat-led monster, while 'Meiyo / Honor' dives back into speed garage territory, balancing a steppy beat with euphoric pads and that all-important wobble. Druggy but meticulously focused, it's material that's engineered with the feet firmly in mind - DJs you know what to do.
