One Of These Days
Heartical, late ‘90s style UK digi-dub steppers by original pioneer Naph-tali and producer Jah Warrior, from the mixing desk of Dougie Wardrop
First issued on CD + LP in 1997, now on its maiden vinyl edition, ‘One of These Days’ is a salient example of the way JA soundsystem music took root and mutated into its steppers definition in the ‘80s into ‘90s UK, paralleling and underlining adjacent movements in techno and jungle during those years, and leading to strains of grime and dubstep.
Pounding hard on the 4, offset with piquant dub chords and melodica, and of course the melancholy holler of Naph-tali, the sound is portrayed here at its propulsive and atmospheric best in a vocal + version sequence kept intact from the OG. Still feted by hardcore steppers in soundsystem hotspots around the UK and beyond, this sound can’t help but remind us to good times balancing a tinny in one mitt and a zoot in the other, pre-smoking ban, especially between the likes of their natty stepper ‘Humane Beings’, the mystical slkank of its title tune, a deep and tripping ‘Pollution Dub’ killer, the biblical declaring of ‘The 22nd Book’, and echo chamber reeler ‘Visionary Dub Pt 2’.
