Hemlock returns from the cold, with a new bumper pack of reticulated, syncopated, hard drum-compatible pressure from Beneath.
M.I.A. since at least 2018, Beneath and Hemlock are preceded by a mean reputation for commanding clubs via their UK skooled take on post-garage-techno. With ‘On Tilt’ Beneath reprises a style of rolling, sub-heavy and drily minimalistic grooves that fit Hemlock’s aesthetic like a glove, picking up right where they left off in 2017 with their roster of Ploy, Parris, Hodge, and Untold all exploring strains of the circa 130bpm virus that begat “hard drum” styles.
Safe to say that Beneath hasn’t discovered a new agey side or picked up a guitar during his downtime - it’s back to the grind with a darkside alacrity that’s charged his best gear for nearly ten years now, packing snarling swang for the rotters in ‘A Shrill Manner’, beside the skipping monks of ‘Bone Hum’, and keeping it exceedingly arid with the scaly hi-hats and stumbled kicks of ’Shambling.’ He properly plunges into post-dubstep dynamics à la his earliest work in ‘Dark Waters,’ and rolls out like an echo of Optical’s late ‘90s neuro D&B in ‘The Passage,’ and keeps it on that limb with the articulated swivel and step of ‘Lesser Circulation’ for the shower face crew.
