Boomkat Product Review:
Recorded at 2006's Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, this Zeitkratzer performance tackles the John Cage compositions 'Four6' (1992), 'Five' (1988) and 'Hymnkus' (1986). Previously tackled by Sonic Youth on their Goodbye 20th Century album, 'Four6' stretches out over thirty minutes, prompting each performer to cycle through a series of twelve pre-determined sounds according to a complex structuring sequence. The outcome is more visceral and immediately absorbing than the tricky score suggests, and Zeitkratzer deliver to their usual high standards. 'Five' is considerably snappier, though is performed under similar conditions, consisting of five voices playing through five synchronised time brackets, each including a maximum of three notes. Finally, 'Hymnkus' represents another difficult half-hour piece, based around eight chromatic tones between G and D1 and a collection of abstract noises, planned to mimic the sonic oppositions between vowels and consonants in hymnal singing.
