Boomkat Product Review:
Shuta Hasunuma fashions a brand of electronic music that marries the melodic, miniaturised electroacoustic experiments of a label like Spekk with the digitised easy listening you might hear from Wechsel Garland, or one of his Karaoke Kalk labelmates. OK Bamboo features heavy use of Shuta's piano, mingled in with a glitchy electronic ambience, occasionally treading on the sort of sonic terrain plotted by Ryuichi Sakamoto's collaboration with Christian Fennesz on Cendre. 'Return Of The Bamboo' carries a similar buzzing, layered ambience whilst never treading on the toes of a central melody. Elsewhere Shuta employs shuffling, minimal beat patterns, with the title track evoking a Murcof-like juxtaposition between contemporary classical music and clicks and cuts electronics. A highly accessible, thoroughly rewarding piece of work, OK Bamboo makes for an ideal springboard into the world of more adventurous microsound.
