Boomkat Product Review:
Now the folktronica movement has come and gone, many of its leading lights have sunk into the background without so much as a squeal. Not so, The Memory Band, who have never really been a band happy to disappear without fanfare. This latest LP shows the band at their most ambitious with Stephen Cracknell leading a veritable circus troupe of London’s folk elite. The music has now managed to step quite far from the hiccupping electronic roots of their early productions, now Cracknell seems more focused on songwriting, and his roots are a fusion of British and American traditions. I can hear the Americana of Calexico and the smoulder of Judee Sill knocking up against the delicate yet sinister Britishisms of The Wicker Man OST. It is an endearing mix and makes for an arresting listen – just make sure to lock up your daughters, May day is just around the corner!
