Boomkat Product Review:
Modular synthesist Matt Carlson and bass clarinetist Jonathan Sielaff converge upon their 2nd album proper as Golden Retriever, moving on from 2011's 'Light Cones' for Root Strata to their new home, Chicago's Thrill Jockey. On 'Occupied With The Unspoken' they again transform monophonic sound sources - using instruments only capable of playing one note at a time - into live electronic music exploding with textured, colourfully chaotic harmonies, melding the experimental, searching disciplines of free jazz, avant-garde classical, noise and '60s minimalism into something fascinating, distinctly refreshing and emotionally compelling. It's music which sears itself onto the ear's retina by dint of its sheer otherworldliness: ultra-vivid lightshows projected by virtuosic performers, manifesting unspeakable melodies and surreal harmonic hallucinations in near-symphonic arrangements.
