Nyege Nyege Tapes USB Bomb
For the last in our series celebrating some of our favourite labels of the year we look at Nyege Nyege Tapes & Hakuna Kulala, a pair of sibling labels that flooded us with pure energy, deploying new and old sounds from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Den Haag, Kenya, South Africa, Indonesia, Japan and Tanzania during an unstoppable 12 month headrush.
From their base in Uganda we got a debut album of mutant hi-NRG bass music from studio engineer Don Zilla, bruising rap dramas from Kampala’s Biga Yut and Lithium, a 45 of Bugandan thunder from Nilotika Drum Ensemble plus an amazing set of court music showcasing the different instruments, styles and techniques that remain the backbone of the local Bugandan culture.
From Kenya; Leon Duncan (a peer of the incredible Duma) delivered a killer debut of industro-dub and free-jazzed electronics somewhere between Slikback x Actress piped thru Equiknoxx's FX chain, DJ Iche chewed up drill/genge and rap crud for a deadly session on ‘Nai Yetu’, and Makossiri drew heavily from Egyptian mythology on an unhinged construction of pneumatic techno, industrial noise, post-punk and experimental club sounds.
The Congo gave us Chrisman’s debut of dismantled & deadly Gqom, a pressurised set of tekno drillers from DJ/producer Oyisse and an acclaimed LP from Rey Sapienz & The Congo Techno Ensemble mixing open-hearted and fiery dancehall futurism.
Tanzania’s boundlessly creative Singeli scene spat out a mighty album from Duke's Pamoja studio and its local cast of young MCs, Durban’s Menzi turned out a ridiculously strong debut tipped if yr into DJ Lag, Nazar or Slikback, Indonesian mentallists Raja Kirik mashed local roots and futurism on a mad LP lifted from the Gabber Modus Operandi rulebook, while Japan’s DJ Scotch Egg assembled a host of Nyege favourites for a standout session under the Scotch Rolex moniker.
And finally, De Schuurman’s criminally overlooked Dutch bubbling productions were compiled on an essential set of bullets recorded between the early 00s and 2019, while Metal Preyers unleashed a chopped and screwed mix of syrupy Afrobeat and Naija anthems somewhere between DJ Screw and Andy Stott.
Add to that an exclusive new session of hyper-rhythms from the mighty Sisso - not available on any other format outside of this USB - and you have yourself 10 hours of the most crucial and forward thinking music you’ll encounter in 2021, pressure sealed and primed to go off.
